CONDITIONS TREATED BY NEUROFEEDBACK

At the root of all neurological conditions is a mismatch between the best response to a situation and the brain’s ability to produce that response.

This mismatch takes many forms. It may manifest as an inability to pay attention (ADD/ADHD); an inability to fall asleep easily, sleep deeply and awake rested (INSOMNIA/SLEEP DISORDERS); a pervasive sense of unease running through one’s life (GENERALIZED ANXIETY DISORDER); persistent attempts to rid oneself of compulsive uncomfortable thoughts by repetitive behaviors (OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE DISORDER); an easily overwhelmed nervous system (AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER); tiredness unrelieved by rest (CHRONIC FATIGUE); the continued recurrence of feelings experienced during a traumatic event (POST TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER); the feeling that you do not have the resources to meet the demands of a meaningful task at hand (STRESS); disordered thinking, lack of concentration, depression and a short fuse (TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY); or the compulsive use of substances to self-medicate and self-soothe (ALCOHOLISM and SUBSTANCE ABUSE).

The ability of the brain to respond effectively depends upon its having well functioning neurological mechanisms – the underlying patterns of brain function. When these neurological patterns operate poorly we experience undesired and unpleasant symptoms. Neurofeedback works by interrupting dysfunctional patterns – in effect causing the brain to wake up and get out of a thought-pattern rut. Absent an underlying pattern, symptoms can not manifest, or manifest as strongly.
